Come sit, sip and be inspired at Café Mozart. Since its opening in 1794, just three years after Mozart’s death, numerous writers, artists and musicians have found inspiration here, working and recharging. Graham Greene frequented the café often, working on his screen play, The Third Man.
Café Mozart sits in Albertinaplatz, smack dab in the heart of Vienna. Its extensive outdoor seating area boasts large umbrellas to keep you shaded, and on warm days, fans and misters keep you comfortably cool.
Breakfast kicks off at 8 am and continues until 3 pm for the late risers. Enjoy Viennese morning classics like ham slices, cottage cheese and soft boiled eggs. Breakfasts come with a small glass of fresh squeezed juice and your choice of a hot beverage, which is brought to your table in an individual pot. Hand-made rolls and croissants are sold separately for about $1 each.
You’ll never be rushed here. Bring a book, take advantage of the free wireless internet or simply be entertained by the endless stream of passersby.
The Viennese have their own style of coffee specialties. Here’s a rundown of their coffee lingo.
Generally, coffee is referred to as being either “white” or “black”. The “white” coffees contain milk, like the Melange, which is similar to a latte. The Der Braune is black espresso served with coffee cream. You can ask for your coffee cream “separee”, or separate.
On hot days, patrons flock to Café Mozart for a Wiener Eiskaffee, or a Viennese iced coffee. You won’t find ice cubes in this drink. Instead, your coffee is cooled with ice cream -- even better! -- and is topped with whipped cream, a wafer and a coffee bean.
Although Café Mozart is mainly known as a coffee house, the lunch and dinner specials here are worth mentioning. The mixed sausage platter comes with Klobase (spicy), Debreziner (lightly smoked and peppered) and a Frankfurter, served with sides of specialty mustard and horseradish. For dinner, try the tasty roasted saddle of lamb, which comes with truffle mashed potatoes.
HelloMetro Tip: Café Mozart’s close proximity to the Opera house and upscale interior décor -- grand, crystal chandeliers and brass accents -- make it an ideal spot for a post performance drink or snack.
